[The following is a letter to Wilsey, from Margee from back home.]
July 9—
Dear Dave-
Goodness- Your last letter’s
March – That must be May
when you are so quick & good
with answers I should be
better – but it occurs to me
you might like to stay
caught up occassionally
& havn’t a desk to stick
letters in until you do get at ‘em
(I have, more’s the pity- the
poor thing is bulging!) So
I didn’t answer immediately
on purpose but I never
meant to let it be this long.
If my letters are friendly
it’s because you are. Friends
are very nice to have & seem
to be so rare. I treasure
each one - & then when they
go & marry people who are
also good friend material
the investment doubles
[2]
& isnt that nice?
However you mite tell
your wife for me that when
I told her that I loved
her even if she didn’t write
I didn’t mean ever- I
figured on an occasional
post card or so[mething] saying
“Im fine hope you are same”
or “Thinking of you”—anything.
I hope your fears of C.B.I.[1]
are groundless and that you
get home real soon to your nice
kids.
Dad’s in Frankfurt now
with the Central Council. He’d
love to see you if you are near.
I hope you arn’t still
in tents & doing with candles.
I didnt think that was ever
necessary any more what with
portable dynamo etc.
[3]
This far & not a word about
Tom. Good, huh? He’s darling-
he has honey colored curly
hair. Can you imagine? & not
a curl in the family. & tans
beautifully. 7 teeth, 22 ½ lbs,
30 ½ inches – walks like any
body else – says “Hot” about
stoves, fans, lightbulbs etc
& pulls back. Pretty good I
think. He has no other word-
even recognizable to a fond
mother – but he understands
many. He’s sunny &
affectionate. Oh, & he’s dry all
nite & trained for BMs so
there are never any messes
anymore. The only thing
I can say derogatorily
about him is he sucks his
thumb. I’ve tried everything
but he’s so good & reasonable
about everything else I’ve
decided to let him quit
[4]
when he wants to. I keep him
busy when he’s up so it’s really
just a bed time thing now.
& I must brag about me a little.
When he quit nursing I decided
I’d do something about all the
weight I’d gained so I have
been counting calories, my
little doctor gave me some
supplements so my teeth’d
stay in & I have at this
time lost 18 pounds in 3 mo.
That’s been slow but it’s
pretty good I think. I look
nicer & feel wonderful. I thot
I’d better get down so that
I’d have a shape to loose
again for baby sister when
she decides to arrive.
I’m wearing my college clothes
again now & feel pretty smart.
Using will power is a new
sort of deal for me & so I have
to brag a little! I quit smoking
[5]
the night Tom started to
arrive & have quit
eating like a horse. (I love
to ear)- so now if I quit
swearing I’ll be nearly
vice-less!
Well- the Little is up now so I
guess that is that – He’ll be
content with his cookie for a
minute but not long.
- is in N.J. by now – he left
here early this AM having spent
the weekend here between
assignments. So we may be
moving as of tomorrow & we
may not too! We’ve thought
we were on our way so often.
Anyway we’re all 3 gonna drive
to wherever he’s sent & find
a place to live when we get there.
It’s wrong not to be a family
when we can be I think.
[6]
I must take old Tom now &
go out – he does around
eating clover & stones
while I mow this horrible
lawn – just get to one end
& have to start over. That’s
one thing mom’ll have to have
help with if I leave.
Well – I do seem to be wound
- Do you like personal historys?
I hope your home soon
Affectionately—
Margee
