30 Sept 44

My very dear Terry[1],

This is a much

more hurried letter than I would

like to write — but today

has been so full. However, I am

just “bubbeling” to tell you,

My Son, something, so here goes:-

After many delays, “finigelings [sic]”,

& frustrations I was finally able

to arrange  something [I may as well

be specific, instead of vague as I would like

to be for the “surprise-element”][2]. I finally

was able to get myself out onto

a pistol range — even thought

I had to go out c̅[3] negro’s, etc, &

under slightly adverse circum-

stances. Anyhoooo, it may be

hard for your very sweet little

mind to understand that I was

[2]

shooting for the “Stake” of getting

something for you to wear —

something for you to really be

proud of. [Your mother has Lieutenant bars,

caduceus[4], etc, etc but you have as yet

nothing to “wear” / wear.][5] Now! I can

very happily & pleasurably state

that you, Sir, have an Automatic

Pistol Sharps Expert’s Medal

to be pinned onto your

Rimona [sic] when you get to

Bismarck as I will send it

there because of the date it now

happens to be [for your information,

Sir, a Marksman is an average of 62%; a

Sharpshooter is an average of 75%; & the

highest ranking is an Expert c̅ 86% or

higher — your Dad shot FOR you

& got a 87.22% to win YOU an Automatic

Pistol Expert Medal].[6] Tell your Mother

that she probably wont want to

[3]

wear it as a general rule, but that

if she begs you, real real hard

you might loan it to her for

a few hours. [Sorta Family-like, loan][7]

So, Son, I am very very happy

that I went after and got

something a fine little man

would be proud of.

Please, please, be sure to

give your Mother

All my dearest Love,

Dave

P.S. Tell her too that I received her

$10 & that I could really use $20 or

$25 more. I will answer her letter

tomorrow.
